Jim Holt on Budget & Economy

Against extending unemployment benefits

I'm against extending unemployment benefits to people who are unemployed for a long period of time. I believe in all the people of Arkansas and this great nation. I talk to them, and I know what they want - a hand up, not a hand out.

Iraqis can rebuild their country with their resources

I would not support continuing to increase the nation's deficit to rebuild Iraq. They have a lot of natural resources. They can rebuild their own country.

We must starve the federal government

We must starve the federal government. They are spend-aholics who will spend any money they can get, and some they have to print up! The people who earned that money are its rightful owners. My hope is that the tax cuts will force Washington to face the real problem - too much spending.

The economy is hindered by the deficit

We can't keep the economy going by running up the deficit. What we are doing now is weakening the value of a dollar, which is a hidden tax. Look at gas prices and commodities that we import from everywhere but China. They are going up. China pegs its currency to the dollar, so this hides the real inflation level. When they get tired of doing that, inflation is going to slam us. With this deficit -driven inflation, people may make the same amount of money that they used to, but it will buy less.
