Bruce Lunsford on Corporations

Democratic Senate challenger

Has built a business, but is a populist at heart

Q: Your active support of Republicans in the past and your history as a successful businessman raises some concern of a potential willingness to continue support of policies that have been so generous to corporate America. Is that concern misplaced?

A: While I am independent-minded, I am a populist at heart and would make decisions based on the needs of working-class Kentuckians. I'm a guy who grew up on a small farm, cut tobacco as a child and worked on road crews laying blacktop to pay for college. I know what it is like to struggle to make ends meet and I can see how people are hurting. I would oppose making the Bush tax cuts permanent and instead push for tax cuts for the middle class. I don't need those tax cuts, other families do. I would support policies that help families burdened with debt instead of making it easier for the credit card industry to lure consumers into even more debt. These are just two examples but there are many, many more to allay those concerns you mention.

Ensure fair competition with corporate agribusiness

We must ensure that small and medium-sized producers can compete fairly with corporate agribusiness. A ban on meat packers owning livestock and manipulating prices should be enacted and the Justice Department must be pushed to ensure that any consolidation of agricultural businesses complies with the law.
