Rocky De La Fuente on Health Care

Focus on goals of reform: cost, quality, access

We must focus on the three original goals of healthcare reform--lower costs, maintained or improved quality, and open access. The ACA was only successful at achieving partial open access. Substantive tort reform needs to be incorporated into the discussion because of the way it distorts prices. Pharmaceutical advertising should also be on the table since it disproportionately adds costs without improving quality.

Catastrophic insurance best way to reassess health care

We must lower costs, maintain or improve quality and have open access. We must readdress healthcare reform in a way that addresses cost and quality along with access. Catastrophic insurance coverage would probably be the best starting point to begin the reassessment. From there, we could build upon that to ensure operational efficiency while minimizing the potential for abuse.

Course correction on ObamaCare, but no repeal

Q: Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("ObamaCare")?

A: No. I do not support repealing the 2010 ACA. However, I would push for a "course correction" of the legislation. The original goal was to expand access to healthcare, lower its cost, and improve the quality of care delivered. Unfortunately, the bill became politicized and only modestly delivered upon one of those goals: expanded access. We need to simplify the legislation, remove the special interests that were embedded in it to get it passed, and refocus on the original three goals. There isn't any reason we cannot deliver quality healthcare to every American.
