"Everytown is going all-in to flip the Senate and elect leaders who will treat America's gun violence epidemic like the crisis it is," the Everytown President said. The group has targeted a number of key races in the House and Senate, emphasizing the need to protect what it calls a "gun sense majority," which is mostly comprised of Democratic candidates.˙

Abdul El-Sayed: No gun possession for convicted domestic abusers

The presence of a firearm in a Domestic Violence situation makes it 5 times more likely a woman will be murdered. In fact, over half of mass shooter incidents involve the killer shooting intimate partners or other family members, including their children. Currently, Michigan law is incredibly weak when it comes to prohibiting convicted domestic abusers from purchasing or possessing guns. Common sense legislation to prevent domestic abusers from obtaining firearms must do all of the following:

Abdul El-Sayed: Take on the corporate gun lobby; enough is enough

Clearly, gun violence is a national epidemic. Enough is enough. Too many elected officials are scared of a corporate gun lobby that is more concerned with making profits for gun manufacturers than promoting responsible gun ownership. I will never take a dime from the gun lobby.
Here are my commitments to make Michigan a safer and more responsible state:
  1. Prohibit the sale or possession of "weapons of war," large capacity magazines, and any modifiers that increase fire rate.
  2. Close background check loopholes.
  3. Include domestic abusers in Michigan's prohibited purchaser provisions.
  4. Require law enforcement to disarm individuals who become prohibited purchasers after purchasing a weapon, being issued a handgun purchase license, or receiving a concealed carry permit.
  5. Reintroduce discretion into the concealed pistol permit process. Michigan is known as a "shall issue" state.
  6. Prohibit the open carry of firearms in public buildings and registered private establishments.

Bob Young: Right to bear arms is one of our most cherished rights

Bob Young fully supports the individual right to bear arms and our constitutional 2nd amendment rights. Michigan law-abiding gun owners, hunters and sportsmen deserve a Senator they can trust to protect their 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. Debbie Stabenow has not--Bob Young will. The Constitutional right to bear arms is one of our most cherished rights that must be guarded from continued attacks by the left.

Jack Bergman: Right to bear arms is about being a free nation

For over two centuries the Second Amendment has guaranteed that our fellow citizens have the right to protect themselves. The right to bear arms is not just about hunting or target practice--it's about being a free nation. I will protect the Second Amendment.

Brenda Lawrence: Enact common sense gun control reforms & close loopholes

Q: How would you reduce the number of firearm-related injuries and deaths in the U.S.?

Brenda Lawrence: We need to enact common sense gun control reforms that include closing the background check loopholes and putting in place no fly, no buy. The number of gun accidents that we have in the country each year makes it clear that we need a better process in place to determine if the person purchasing or owning a gun is educated and qualified to be responsible for the weapon. I think the process should be similar to obtaining and renewing a driver's license. We also need to implement smart technologies that are available now.

Marcia Squier (Green Party): I would reduce the number of firearm-related injuries and deaths in the U.S. by having universal background checks for violent offenders, we can ensure that vicious people can't legally own a gun.

Marcia Squier: Universal background checks to reduce gun crime

Q: How would you reduce the number of firearm-related injuries and deaths in the U.S.?

Marcia Squier: I would reduce the number of firearm-related injuries and deaths in the U.S. in several ways. By having universal background checks for violent offenders, we can ensure that vicious people can't legally own a gun. By decriminalizing Marijuana and ending the war on drugs, we can decrease a major factor in many of these violent crimes. Black market drug dealers will be a thing of the past because they can earn a legally recognized income. In addition, by offering universal health care and public funding of higher education, we will prevent crime by letting people receive mental health therapy and a college education. Add that to a basic livable wage, and you have a great recipe for success.

Rep. Brenda Lawrence (Dem.): We need to enact common sense gun control reforms that include closing the background check loopholes and putting in place no fly, no buy.

Dave Trott: 2nd Amendment is important cornerstone of nation's freedoms

As a member of the NRA, Dave strongly believes that the 2nd Amendment is an important cornerstone of our nation's freedoms. Any law abiding American citizen should be able to exercise this right. As a Congressman, Dave would strongly support the right to bear arms and will defend the Second Amendment vigorously.

Debbie Dingell: Deal with mental illness and gun control laws

Q: You wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post about how we can't have a knee-jerk reaction to gun control laws but at the same time we need to respond to school shootings?

A: And we haven't done anything. You know, we've got mental illness and law enforcement officers talk about veterans who are coming back with post traumatic stress. I wanted to write an article after they had the shootings in California about how to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. When I went to write it, you really do realize how complicated the issue is. Because I do also want to take the stigma off it. That means if someone is postpartum depressed and has to go on an anti-depressant for a few months, is that somebody that you want to somehow never let own a gun ever again? It's not straightforward. And it will keep people from seeking the treatment that they need. So, it's complicated. But, just because it's complicated doesn't mean that we don't look at how we can solve the problem.

Terri Lynn Land: Supports GOP platform which opposes magazine limit

Terri Lynn Land announced she will continue to serve as National Committeewoman for the National Republican Party while running for Senate. In this role, Land voted for, and will continue to promote, the GOP platform, which called for turning Medicare into a voucher program and a ban on abortion that did not include exceptions for rape, incest or saving a woman's life. Land's extreme GOP platform also supported privatizing Social Security, banning same sex marriage, opposing any gun legislation that would limit "the capacity of clips or magazine," banning women from combat, and a study to determine whether to return the US dollar to the gold standard.

In August 2009, the New York Times reported that the 2012 GOP platform "opposes gun legislation that would limit 'the capacity of clips or magazines.'"

Rick Snyder: Absolutely uphold the 2nd Amendment

Q: Would you uphold the 2nd Amendment and support the rights of gun owners as well as the hunting industry?

A: In one word: absolutely. I actually own three guns myself. I have a 12 gauge shotgun and two .22 rifles that I use for target shooting. I believe the 2nd amendment also protects the right of citizens to have a gun in their home to protect their family and property. I also support the rights of gun owners to responsibly carry their gun, as long as they have attained the legal permit. While I'm not an avid hunter, I support the industry and believe it plays an important role in our economy and quality of life. It also can have a valuable environmental conservation impact and I would work to streamline the processes so that hunters get better customer service from the state and local governments. We have a long tradition in our state of supporting gun rights and the hunting industry in Michigan and I would continue to support that tradition as Governor.

That the intoxicating effect of power has gone to elected officials’ heads is seen in their refusal to protect free speech as seen in their passing of the Campaign Finance Reform bill, and in their constant meddling with our 2nd amendment rights.
