Gail Lightfoot on Civil Rights

2000 Libertarian Challenger for Senate (CA)

Free to hire the best person for the job

Q: Do you support or oppose requiring companies to hire more women & minorities?

A: NO. A company is free to hire the best person for the job.

End licensing marriage; support same-sex as marriage choice

Q: Do you support or oppose same-sex domestic partnership benefits?

A: Support but not mandate. Separation of church and state would mean churches do what they wish and those who want a state license would go to a government clerk. End licensing marriage.

[Domestic partnership benefits] are up to the company doing the hiring. Just as the wage they pay or the hours they set for their employees (short of outright abuse or unsafe conditions).

Supports “Sexual orientation protected by civil rights laws”

I support protection of the individual right to live free and seek happiness peacefully. We do not need to single out one group over another for protection. We must protect all individuals equally. IF we protect every persons individual civil rights we do not need to protect their sexual orientation. Tolerance is a virtue to be encouraged.

Neutral on requiring companies to hire more minorities

This depends on whether you are talking about government contracts or totally private sector business decisions. What is required of government might not be required of a private individual, business or organization.
