Donna Shalala on Free Trade

Trump tariffs are hurting Miami companies

Republican opponent Maria Elvira Salazar:I only support [Trump's tariffs] with China for a limited period of time until we can negotiate a better trade deal with China.
  • Shalala: I do not believe that a tariff war is in the interest of American business and American business doesn't either.
  • Salazar: We should explain the danger China represents for our future.
  • Shalala: I think there are serious problems with China on intellectual property. The question is did you have to get into a whole trade war to deal with that issue in particular?
  • Salazar:I believe in sitting down like [Trump] is doing with Mexico and Canada and restructuring the free trade agreements. We need to protect our industries.
  • Shalala: Are there some things that are wrong with our trade relations? You bet. But in the process, you're hurting Miami companies. You stick tariffs on steel and aluminum and on all of the finishes that take place inside a house and you're really going to run up housing prices.
